Job description

  • Laboratory

The position is to be filled within the Experimental Radiotherapy platform managed by Frédéric Pouzoulet.

Attached to the Translational Research Department headed by Sergio Roman Roman, the platform's mission is to provide users with different types of ionizing radiation sources to treat both cells and animals. It also provides the technical and theoretical skills to develop and support projects in the fields of radiobiology and experimental radiotherapy. Currently it is made up of 6 members: a manager, a physicist engineer and four biologist engineers.

This position is open to support the implementation of new µPET/µCT imaging and vectorized internal radiotherapy activities. PET (positron emission tomography) is a non-invasive functional imaging technique requiring the injection of a radioactive product that emits positrons (beta plus radiation). The installed equipment is coupled with a scanner for anatomical imaging. The development of these activities will be done in close relationship with the translational imaging laboratory in oncology headed by Irène Buvat ( and with Claire Provost of the radiopharmacology department of the hospital headed by Olivier Madar.

In this context, the main mission of the engineer will be to participate in the management of the irradiation and imaging devices present on the platform, both in terms of quality controls and uses. He/she will also contribute to experimental treatments on the proton beam lines of the Orsay Protontherapy Center.


  • Missions

Under the authority of the Platform Manager, the engineer will:

  • Participate in the implementation and carry out quality controls on the platform's irradiation and imaging systems;
  • Monitor the maintenance, operation and management of the platform's equipment, including practical training at the user's workstation;
  • Carry out image acquisitions (µPET/µCT) and treatment with SARRP;
  • Participate in image acquisitions and/or implementation of protocols for multimodal imaging (ultrasound, bioluminescence imaging, PET, image fusion);
  • Carry out technological developments for the use of imaging systems (workflow, implementation of protocols for new tracers, etc.), and irradiation (TPS, dosimetric measurements, film measurements, accessories, etc.);
  • Participate in the management of radiation protection in the hot zone in conjunction with the radiation protection officer;
  • Exploit and present the results of the measurements and write experimental or study reports and technical notes;
  • Develop consulting and training activities with users and scientific partners;
  • Participate in irradiations on animals and cells on the platform's irradiation systems and at the Proton Therapy Center;
  • Keep abreast of technical developments and implement them within the platform;
  • Ensure the management of the animals included in the projects (in animal facilities: monitoring (change, socialization (rats), weight monitoring)), transfer of animals, anesthesia and placement on irradiation or imaging devices.

Contraints and risks

  • Occasional work on weekends and at night
  • Travel (Paris-Orsay-Saint Cloud)
  • Use of sealed and unsealed sources.


Candidate Profile

Training and experience required

  • Training and level requested: Master degree/PhD in physics, medical physics, imaging, etc
  • Professional experience: 2 to 5 years
  • Authorization: if possible Animal experimentation level I (Designer)
  • Knowledge of the techniques applied in the field:
    • Have good knowledge associated with PET and CT imaging (quality control of imaging devices, manipulation of tracers, image acquisition and analysis) as well as radiotherapy (dosimetry, treatment planning system) and master the physics of low energy photons (<150 keV);
    • General knowledge of biology and related disciplines: physiology, cell biology, animal experimentation, biomedical imaging.


Skills and qualities required

  • Dosimetry: ionization chamber, transmission chamber, film, diode, TLDs, alanine, Fricke, etc…
  • Beam characterization: field homogeneity, CDA measurement, etc…
  • Use of a TPS
  • Acquisition, interpretation and contouring of scanner and PET images
  • Image analysis
  • Management of radioactive tracers
  • Use of computer office tools
  • On small animals (rats, mice): restraint, anesthesia, injection.
  • Language skills: fluent in French and English
  • Personal qualities:
